Luohu community promotes sustainable development
Luohu’s Ludan village community in Guiyuan subdistrict organized an old clothes-altering activity on July 16, in a bid to promote sustainable development in people’s daily life.
The activity started with a seminar, in which a lecturer introduced the whole life of a cotton T-shirt. A regular garment's life cycle starts with cotton planting, textile printing, dyeing, cutting and production, transportation, and sales. Finally, it becomes worn out and is incinerated or buried.
A standard cotton T-shirt emits about 7 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions during its life cycle and uses about 30 kWh of electricity.
The knowledge prompted participants to take the initiative to make the best use of old clothes and reduce extravagance and waste.
Chen Shanshan, Party secretary of the community, said that the young people should establish the correct concept of consumption and environmental protection and assume the social responsibility for environmental protection.
She pointed out that the cause calls on everyone to participate in the green environmental protection action, form the civilized habit of caring for the environment, make the best use of things, and jointly create a green and civilized urban environment.
The participants said the activity gave community residents a deeper understanding of the significance of building a civilized city and improved people's awareness of civilization and environmental protection.
