More than 5,000 drivers of 43 taxi companies volunteered to send students sitting in the national college entrance examination, or gaokao, to their examination sites, free of charge, this year in Shenzhen.
The arguably most important exam in the country was held from June 7 to 9. This year, the seasonal rain complicated travel arrangements.
The Shenzhen-Hong Kong volunteer taxi team also participated the escort activity and this is the 13th year that they have offered such services. On June 7, they drove more than 80 students to the test sites.
“Over the years, we have driven many examinees to the test center. The students have studied hard for 12 years to prepare for the examination, which is essential for them,” said You Mingzhang, a driver of Shenzhen-Hong Kong volunteer taxi team.
Students can book the free taxi services online in advance. In case of emergency, they can hail participating taxis without an advanced booking as long as they show the driver their exam certificate.
