Luohu revives old urban areas into new developments
As the first district founded in Shenzhen, Luohu now faces some bottleneck issues in its urban renewal endeavors, and the most prominent restriction is its limited land area. The district government has left no stones unturned to improve its land use efficiency so that more land can be saved for urban renovation projects.
In the construction site of the Mutoulong community, seven of the thirteen buildings to be built will be government-subsidized houses. Lu Renfang, a representative of the community, said it will be a multi-functional modern neighborhood that will be put into use in 2023, and that local residents’ life quality will be improved remarkably.
The Mutoulong community is an epitome of how Luohu tries to secure more space for its development. Luohu encourages state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to take part in its renovation projects.
These projects also contribute to the improvement of Luohu’s public services and public facilities. For instance, community-level rehabilitation centers have sprung out across the district to better meet needs for quality medical services at the grassroots level, while easing burdens on major hospitals.
Luohu’s gross domestic product increased from 7 million yuan in 1980 to 239 billion yuan in 2019, with finance, commerce and services as pillar industries, jewelry and cultural innovation as characteristic industries, and strategic emerging industries as a driver of its modern industry system.
