Huangbeiling village of Luohu installed a smart community safety emergency response system in late July involving the monitoring of fire hazards in real time and providing early warnings through various channels when necessary.
The system, based on the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and other advanced information technology, can detect smoke, measure temperatures and humidity, and monitor the concentration of combustible gases, providing a new guarantee for villagers’ safety.
With more than 650 years of history, Huangbeiling is one of the oldest villages in Shenzhen, covering an area of 1.2 square kilometers and is home to about 48,000 people.
Because of a lack of public fire-fighting equipment, and residents’ comparatively low fire safety awareness, fire alarms in the village have rung about 370 times over the past five years, accounting for more than half the fire emergencies under jurisdiction of the Huangbei sub-district office of Luohu.
Zhang Weilie, director of the fire prevention office of Huangbeiling Co., an enterprise collectively owned by the villagers, said the system is able to provide early warning for villagers once it detects fire risks at their home, as their old household appliances in use have been a main cause of fires in recent years.

However, despite the installation of the system, villagers still need to raise their fire prevention awareness.
Huangbeiling is an epitome of how Luohu applies advanced technology to improve fire safety of its old urban villages, which it regards as an indispensible part of its construction of a smart city.
