Luohu's May Day holiday sees tourism surge and booming retail

During the 2025 May Day holiday, Luohu District in Shenzhen welcomed about 624,400 domestic tourists, representing a 24.29% increase compared to last year. Tourism revenue rose by 19.77%, and the district's 13 major commercial complexes attracted about 4.5 million visits, up 16.5% year-on-year.
Among them, Yitian Holiday Plaza saw strong footfall with around 580,000 visitors. The newly opened plaza, one of the largest commercial developments in Luohu in recent years, brought in 173 brands across retail, dining, and leisure.
The debut of the district's first Yonghui Superstore, modeled on the popular Pangdonglai experience, became an instant draw for shoppers. The plaza is home to four South China or Shenzhen first stores and 36 Luohu first stores, including Super Anta, Huawei Smart Life Store, Midou Amusement Park, and M Bookstore, demonstrating a strong "first-store economy" effect.
Taking advantage of its proximity to Luohu and Liantang checkpoints, the mall also targeted cross-border shoppers from Hong Kong. It offered dedicated discounts and promotions through platforms such as AlipayHK and WeChat Pay HK, injecting new momentum into cross-border consumption.
Meanwhile, Luohu's Urban Fun Tour launched its fifth edition on May 1, drawing over 300 residents. With the participation of local cartoon characters "A Zhen and A Qiang," the event connected five commercial districts and 16 key shopping malls through a series of interactive activities like blind box giveaways and prize raffles.
During the holiday, the event distributed over 3,000 gift packs, 1,000 blind boxes, and 210 low-altitude flight experience coupons, and attracted over 100,000 interactions at its installations.
Throughout May, Luohu is hosting a consumption campaign featuring themed activities and curated shopping-tour routes, bringing together businesses, industry groups, and government departments to sustain momentum.
Holiday highlights included Sungang's smart home carnival, a romantic event at Wutong Pavilion, a tax-free shopping carnival at MixC with a new one-invoice-per-package refund model, a campaign spotlighting Luohu's signature cuisine, and the immersive "Luohu Live Show" combining shopping with light and sound performances.
The campaign will continue through June 2, with new experiences planned around upcoming dates such as the Dragon Boat Festival, aiming to create immersive consumption scenes and activate fresh growth in the local market.
