Luohu Port handles 1.16 million travelers during May Day holiday

From May 1 to 5, Luohu Port recorded close to 1.16 million inbound and outbound travelers, ranking first among all Shenzhen ports, according to Shenzhen immigration authorities. The figure marks a 31.5% increase year-on-year, with Hong Kong and Macao residents making up over 60% of inbound travelers. On May 2 alone, nearly 130,000 mainland residents crossed the border via Luohu, setting a new daily record since 2023.
The surge in cross-border movement was driven by a wide range of holiday activities across the Greater Bay Area, including the Hong Kong Palace Museum exhibitions, cultural festivals in Shenzhen, and fireworks shows in Zhuhai. Travelers took advantage of convenient policies such as the "Bay Area Pass" and praised the fast and seamless clearance process—often completed in under five minutes.
Outbound travel mainly consisted of family and friends traveling abroad, while younger visitors favored hiking and in-depth nature tours in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, inbound foreign visitor numbers also rose significantly, averaging over 4,000 entries per day, thanks to new visa-free policies, tax refund programs, and events like the Canton Fair. The number of visa-free entries nearly doubled year-on-year.
Visitors from Southeast Asia and beyond are increasingly choosing combined Hong Kong–Guangdong tour packages, aided by the 144-hour visa-free policy for group travelers in select cities. Travel agencies reported a 15% increase in bookings for themed day trips during the holiday.
To ensure smooth and secure border crossings, Luohu Border Inspection Station strengthened coordination with Hong Kong authorities, optimized traffic flow, and expanded multilingual services. Personalized guidance, intelligent pre-check systems, and advanced queuing arrangements improved clearance efficiency by 40%. Volunteers also provided policy explanations and tourism tips in various languages, enhancing Luohu's image as a gateway with international service standards.
