AI dance drama to be staged at national theater
The first dance drama themed around artificial intelligence technology in China, AI in Love, will be staged at National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing for three days, starting Aug 25.
The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Luohu Committee is one of the producers of the dance drama, which focuses on emotional interactions between humankind and AI. Experts say that it represents a breakthrough in the field of Chinese dance drama.
The play makes full use of scientific and technological elements, such as robots, naked-eye 3D, and high-tech screens, to present a creative transformation and innovative development of dance language.
The play revolves around the premise of companionship, telling the story of the protagonist from childhood to adulthood. Portrayed as an equal to human beings, the AI in the story begins only by acting according to a basic set of procedures, or its programming, before gradually developing the ability to form human emotions. Finally, it realizes that it is "aging" as well, and so takes the initiative to leave.
Discussing her ideas for the play, Tong Ruirui, director of the dance drama, said that she hopes to broaden the boundaries of dance drama by exploring unknown areas, tapping the potential of humanity and touching upon infinite art with limited life.
The artist’s exploration of the unknown is also a simulation of human imagination and creativity for the future, she added.
