Shenzhen enhances child-friendly spaces
November 20 marks World Children’s Day, and Shenzhen has rolled out multiple upgrades and new developments in public spaces for children. From the newly operational Shenzhen Children’s Hospital Longhua Campus, designed with a "child-friendly" philosophy, to the opening of the second phase of Shenzhen Talent Park featuring educational and fun children’s activity areas, and the renovation of Shenzhen Children’s Park, the city is providing more safe, engaging, and educational spaces for children.
Creating a child-friendly environment is one of Shenzhen’s top 10 public welfare initiatives this year, with a focus on upgrading, enhancing, and increasing indoor and outdoor activity spaces and facilities for children.
As of now, Shenzhen has established 678 child-friendly sites across the city. These include 16 child-friendly streets, 276 child-friendly communities and parks, and one urban village. In addition, the city has enhanced facilities in 51 schools, 35 kindergartens, and six daycare centers, as well as in 35 libraries, 22 hospitals, and 27 community health centers. Shenzhen’s parks and transportation systems are also part of this initiative, with 54 parks and 11 transportation systems now equipped with child-friendly features. Practical experience venues have been expanded to 144, providing diverse opportunities for children to learn and explore.
The city’s child-friendly community coverage rate has reached 40.7%. Since 2020, Shenzhen has designated the third Saturday of every November as "Child-Friendly Community Day," hosting over 600 activities annually to promote awareness and engagement. Shenzhen is also gradually enhancing facilities in its 1,260 parks to include more children’s activity areas and nature education spaces. Meanwhile, 762 Community Children’s Homes have been established, achieving full coverage across neighborhoods to ensure accessible and supportive environments for children.
