Hong Kong-Macao cargo transport program initiated
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government announced on Aug 7 that, with the agreement of the two governments, the cross-boundary cargo transportation program between Hong Kong and Macao via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was officially put into place, and the cargo transfer station at Macao Port would open on Aug 8. The move is expected to make it easier to transport goods between Hong Kong and Macao.
According to the program,Hong Kong trucks can transport goods from Hong Kong to the Macao Port transfer station via the bridge, as well as transport Macao's goods back to Hong Kong. After arriving in Hong Kong via the bridge, Macao trucks can travel to logistics facilities at the Hong Kong International Airport to unload the goods from Macao and also transport goods from Hong Kong back to Macao along the same route. The arrangement also expands the customer network of the Hong Kong International Airport’s logistics facilities.
John Lee, Hong Kong’s chief executive, said that the arrangement is a new and important measure to enhance Hong Kong and Macao’s logistics facilities and provide greater convenience and efficiency for cross-boundary cargo transport between the cities, which is currently mainly carried out by sea.
Hong Kong trucks loading and unloading cargo at the Macao Port transfer station via the bridge will be exempt from Macao business tax registration and Macao driving tax, and drivers will not be required to apply for Macao driving licenses. The daily limit for Hong Kong goods vehicles to Macao was initially set at around 400 vehicles.
