Shenzhen solidifies leadership in smart and new energy vehicles
Shenzhen’s technological leadership now extends to its thriving intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) and new energy vehicle (NEV) sectors, propelling the city to the forefront of global automotive innovation. Home to over 2,400 enterprises in the ICV industry—1,400 of which specialize in autonomous driving—Shenzhen leads the nation in this dynamic field.
Shenzhen has initially achieved regular and diversified scenario operations of functional unmanned vehicles in pilot projects, opening 944 kilometers of test and demonstration roads by mid-2024. To date, 19 companies have been granted permits of road testing and demonstration applications for 349 vehicles.
This rapid progress has bolstered Shenzhen’s NEV industry. On Nov. 14, China's 10 millionth EV rolled off the production line, making the country the first in the world to reach the milestone. Shenzhen contributed significantly, producing approximately 1.83 million NEVs by the end of Q3 2024, surpassing its total output for 2023.
Guided by Shenzhen’s three-year action plan (2023-2025) to transform the city into a world-class automotive hub, the city targets annual NEV production of over 2 million units by 2025, with the industry’s output value expected to surpass 1 trillion yuan.
