Shenzhen railway system breaks passenger records during post-holiday surge
From Oct. 6 to 8, Shenzhen's railway system experienced a sharp rise in returning passengers, marking the peak of post-holiday travel. During this period, it was estimated that over 420,000 passengers arrived in Shenzhen daily. On Oct. 6, Shenzhenbei Railway Station alone welcomed 318,000 travelers, surpassing the previous single-day record of 300,000 set during the 2023 Spring Festival, setting a new historical high.
To meet the surge in demand, railway authorities swiftly increased transport capacity, adding multiple high-speed train services from major hubs such as Changshanan, Guangzhounan, Meizhouxi, and Chaoshan to Shenzhenbei.
Lin Qin, director of passenger services at Shenzhen North Station, highlighted the station's extraordinary efforts to accommodate the influx. "In the early hours of Oct. 6, we added 45 nighttime high-speed trains. Nearly 32,000 passengers arrived at night, and we stayed open all night to manage the flow," Lin explained.
In addition to expanding train services, railway authorities coordinated with municipal transportation departments to extend the operating hours of local public transportation. This included deploying more taxis and rideshare vehicles to ensure passengers had seamless and worry-free connections to their final destinations, even during late-night arrivals.
