Shenzhen hosts International Biodiversity Day event
On May 19, the Shenzhen Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, in collaboration with the Luohu District Government, hosted the 2024 International Biodiversity Day event, calling for collective efforts to protect urban biodiversity.
According to the released "Urban Biodiversity Assessment Index System" at the event, Shenzhen had documented 651 species of terrestrial native vertebrates and 2,218 species of wild vascular plants by the end of 2023, including 161 nationally protected species.
Shenzhen has enhanced its biodiversity policy framework. Key measures include the implementation of special ecological and environmental protection regulations, opinions on promoting green urban ecological construction, and a three-year action plan for biodiversity conservation.
The city has established 27 nature reserves, developed new biodiversity protection and restoration patterns, built iconic ecological corridors, and optimized the "One Library and Three Centers" initiative. Public engagement in biodiversity conservation is also increasing. Shenzhen is home to 23 nature schools and 49 nature education centers, with 352 environmental organizations and 200,000 environmental volunteers contributing to the cause. This comprehensive approach underscores the city's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.
