Shenzhen tourism boom shows economy recovering
During the May Day holiday from April 28-May 3, Shenzhen received a total of 5.18 million tourists and achieved a tourism revenue of 3.89 billion yuan ($563 million), up 107.8% and 114.05% year-on-year, respectively, and 16.36% and 10.85%, respectively, compared with the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and parks all saw a sharp rise in the number of visitors, becoming the main beneficiary of the recent tourism boom.
The crowds in the tourist destinations and service sectors are also in line with the data provided by the transport sector. The explosive growth in the number of trips taken from Shenzhen’s airport, railway stations, and subway stations in the city during the May Day holiday demonstrates a strong economic recovery momentum.
On April 28, the Shenzhen airport carried out 1,143 flights, with 182,500 inbound and outbound passengers, a record high in the airport's single-day passenger flow history.
On April 30, the number of passengers departing from Shenzhen North Railway Station reached 313,000, the first time it has exceeded 300,000 since the station came into operation 12 years ago, an increase of 12.3% from that of the Spring Festival this year, and up 51% compared with the same period in 2019. On that day, 215,000 passengers arrived in Shenzhen via the station.
On April 28, the subway system of Shenzhen handled 8.87 million trips, a historic high.
